OUR SAILING AREA

"Suddenly the sun lifted over the horizon, and the sky turned the smooth enamelled blue of a jay's eye. The endless, meticulous curves of the sea flamed for an instant and then changed to a deep royal purple flecked with green. The mist lifted in quick, lithe ribbons and before us lay the island, the mountains as though sleeping beneath a crumpled blanket of brown, the folds stained with the green of olive groves. Along the shore curved beaches as white as tusks among tottering cities of brilliant gold, red, and white rocks..."
Gerald Durrell describing his arrival in Greece

The Aegean Sea is one of the world's most famous and picturesque sailing destinations. Miles of coast and volcanic landscape characterise the area connecting the Saronic and Argolic Gulfs, which is studded with distinctive islands. If we'd designed it ourselves, we couldn't have created a more perfect setting for sailing.

Aegean Legends
It's easy to see why so many Greek legends centre on the Aegean Sea, whose clear waters and stunning geological lines make it a truly magical place. Aegina, where our school is based, was named after an island nymph - one of Zeus's many lovers. Local history is populated by Greek legends Saron, Zeus, Poseidon and Aeacus, and you'll find physical monuments to them in the islands.

Islands of character
From Hydra, where donkeys are used instead of motor vehicles, to sociable Poros and nudists' favourite Angistri - the Aegean islands have character all of their own. Aegina (pronounced Ayina) is best known for its delicious pistachio nuts. It has a breathtaking temple, the Sanctuary to Aphaia, situated high in the hills - forming an equilateral triangle with the Parthenon in Athens and Temple of Poseidon at Sounion.

Stunning Coastlines
The mainland coast too has its attractions - from Epidavros, where you can visit the ancient theatre, to the dramatic mountain backdrop to the bays on the Peloponnese. During your sailing course you'll have the opportunity to sample some of this diverse range. Favouring the less commercialised haunts, we'll take you to authentic tavernas, legendary ruins, and hidden beauty spots.

Climate and conditions
The gulfs enjoy a long summer with winds normally F3 - F5, perfect for sailing. In spring and autumn, temperatures are mild and pleasant, although there are occasional clouds and cooler days. In mid summer the sun shines every day, and the sea breeze provides a welcome respite from the heat. Because we're based close to Athens, we time our sailing departures to avoid periods of heavy traffic. As few flotillas operate here, you'll find most of the area surprisingly peaceful and un-crowded.

The Cyclades
The Cyclades are the best-known island group in the Aegean. This sailing area is unsuitable for novice sailors but features plenty of challenges for those with sufficient experience - including strong winds and big seas, traffic separation schemes, ferries and sectional lights. To reach the Cyclades involves a long day or overnight sail from our base. We offer you the opportunity to sail in this area on one of our milebuilding trips.

Holiday extras
Less than an hour from Athens by hydrofoil, Aegina and nearby islands make the perfect base for your holiday - and if you wish to extend your time, there's plenty to do. Ask Melody for details of water-skiing, diving, rambling, sightseeing and much more. If you simply want to relax by a pool or on the beach after your week's sailing we can obtain competitive rates for you at local hotels.
