Sailing Theory Course

The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course is the traditional preparation for taking an RYA Day Skipper Practical course. It is provides a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers.

This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.

If you are (or hope to be) a boat owner or you intend to sail in tidal waters, then this is the course you should do.

Those who only plan to charter and sail in non-tidal waters such as the Mediterranean may prefer to take the shorter RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship course.

We supply an online course for distance learning. We can also run a Day Skipper Shorebased course in a classroom for 2 or more people over 5 days.

Course topics include:

  • the basics of seamanship
  • the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
  • chartwork
  • electronic charts
  • position fixing
  • plotting a course to steer
  • weather forecasting and meteorology
  • tides
  • collision regulations
  • construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
  • emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
