The RYA's navigation and seamanship theory courses are designed to complement courses in the RYA practical training scheme. The shorebased courses equip would-be skippers with enough knowledge, at least in theory, to go afloat and take charge of a yacht or motor boat.
The next logical step is to attend an RYA practical course to put these skills into practice - see the Sailing Courses and Powerboat Courses options on the left.
There are various ways to complete a shorebased course: in the UK they are offered through evening classes over the winter months, you can complete an intensive course, or you can sign up with a distance learning centre.
In addition to navigation and seamanship, the RYA has a programme of one-day support courses which enable you to expand your knowledge and skills in specialist areas.
Some courses, such as the Marine Radio Short Range Certificate, are a pre-requisite for higher qualifications such as the RYA Yachtmaster® Offshore Certificate of Competence.
Before commencing any of the skipper courses, you'll need to cover the basic theory - navigation, collision regulations, safety procedures and so on.
Classroom Based: Our 4-day Shore-based Theory course will equip you for the RYA Day Skipper practical course (above).
Distance Learning: You can study for the appropriate level of RYA shorebased course by distance learning - read more in the Distance-Learning section.
Operating a marine radio, fixing the engine, surviving a crisis - these 1-day practical are designed to be fun as well as useful, with lots of hands-on activity.
On-shore: One day courses cover Diesel Engine Maintenance and Marine Radio Operation - Why not add these to your 5-day sailing course?
Get Wet: Our 1-day Sea Survival course is essential preparation for anyone planning an extended cruise. It is also a requirement for a commercial skipper's licence. Run twice a year.
